For this step, you may need:  1 pair of needle nosed pliers or tweezers

Summary of this page:  This page outlines the procedure for setting up the function of both drives.  The section below describes how to set up a drive as a 'master' or 'slave'.

Configuring the drives

  • Touch a metal part of your computer to discharge any static buildup.  It only takes a slight electrical current to permanently damage any computer component.

  • The best way to go as far as determining 'master' and 'slave' is simplicity.  So we will let the original drive remain 'master' and the assign the new drive as 'slave'.
  • With your drive came a small plastic sliver called a "shunt".  The placement of the shunt is what determines if a drive is going to be the 'master' or 'slave'.  It's either already attached to the drive, or it's in a plastic bag.  The following is an example of your new 'slave' drive.  Using the needle nosed pliers, slide the shunt over the two pins marked 'slave'.

Now that you have the drives configured, it's time to install your new drive.
